Vilhaelm Torvund
Joseph began the process of formulating combinations of herbs into various herbal formulas that would be effective in the therapeutic prevention and treatment of the most oppressive and frequently encountered ailments in our society. By utilizing various traditional sources of information and recent scientific research, he began producing and dispensing 70 Professional Herbal Formulas comprising over 150 different botanicals during early 1973.
Commencing in late August 1977, I began contacting those persons who had used the various herbal formulas for specific ailments in order to determine their overall effectiveness. The results were tabulated, and the statistical report is outlined below.
The Statistical Data Analysis project was undertaken in August, 1977 in order to determine the therapeutic effectiveness of the 70 Professional Herbal Formulas (prepared exclusively from naturally-derived botanicals) for preventative treatment and therapeutic application on approximately 120 different ailments (see footnote #1). In some cases, specific herbal supplements were also utilized during the treatment programs (see footnote #2).
For many years, the demand to furnish precise statistical analysis of the therapeutic effectiveness of botanical medicines for the medical community has been continually expressed by herbalists, herbal researchers, clinicians and practitioners throughout the United States.
Herbal formulations have been employed by healing practitioners in most of the civilizations of the world since the dawn of recorded history. Joseph researched the ingredients for the 70 Professional Herbal Formulas from hundreds of traditional sources of information (see footnote #3). He specifically prepared each of these Formulas as preventatives for a comprehensive spectrum of illnesses, ranging in severity from the common cold to cancer (see footnote #4).
The 70 Professional Herbal Formulas were
administered to 3,627 individual patients from August 1975 to
August 1977 (the period of time spanning this report), from the
ages of 9 months to 93 years (see footnote #5). It was possible
to contact 1,581 of these, who were interviewed in order to
determine the reliability and accuracy of their dosage history
for this project. On the basis of these criterion, a random
sampling of 281 persons were selected for tabulation of their
medical data
(see footnote #6).
The Statistical Data Analysis Report questionnaire was divided into four major areas of inquiry, and converted into 64 specific multiple choice questions, for input into "op-scan" processors.
The 64 multiple choice questions covered the following areas of analysis-profile: (1) the therapeutic history of the patient, and the resultant effect(s) of the Herbal Formulas on indicated illness(es); (2) the amount of formula used, and the duration of time required to affect therapeutic remission; (3) the history of the patient's specific reactions to the Herbal Formulas; and (4) any resultant side-effects the patients may have experienced from the formula therapy. Any side-effects noted from the usage of these formulas were only the result of therapeutic "healing crisis" conditions, and not due to symptomatic or pathological effects attributable to synthetic pharmaceutical drugs.
There are three categories for the possible response factors in this analysis: (1) Category A, therapeutic effectiveness; (2) Category B, non-effectiveness; and (3) Category C, indeterminable or uncertain therapeutic effectiveness. In some cases, especially with the use of depuratives and astringents, short-term usage caused some difficulty for accurate categorization. Obviously, one factor for any such determination is the capability to determine short-term therapeutic effectiveness for long-term ailment-conditions. The factors for calculating the statistical values for Category C usually involved many elemental considerations, and required reformulation in order to simplify the problem of weighing component percentage figures, thereby providing for more accurate final effectiveness values for the Herbal Formulas.
In the 281 cases profiled (see footnote #7), a total of 610 of the Herbal Formulas were employed (see footnote #8), and 534 were reported effective (see footnote #9). Ineffectiveness was reported in 23 instances; and in 67 others, effectiveness was reported as uncertain or indeterminable (see footnote #10). On December 31, 1977, the computer facility of Portland State University processed the data from an adapted SPSS master program supplied by the Vogelback Computing Center of Northwestern University (see footnote #11).
The overall effectiveness of the 70 Professional Herbal Formulas was calculated at a minimum of 87.549% (see footnote #12); and maximum of 98.447% (see footnote #13); the mean-average interpolated percentage, 92.998% (see footnote #14); statistical average, 94.617% (see footnote #15); and the therapeutic side-effects, 3.92% (see footnote #16).
The thirty most frequently used Herbal
Formulas with their respective percentages of use in the overall
tabulation are as follows:
No. 49 -- 8.986% | No. 11 -- .983% |
No. 60 -- 8.333% | No. 13 -- .983% |
No. 51 -- 7.516% | No. 4 -- .819% |
No. 9 -- 6.372% | No. 18 -- .819% |
No. 14 -- 5.718% | No. 65 -- .655% |
No. 44 -- 4.738% | No. 15 -- .655% |
No. 27 -- 4.248% | No. 1 -- .655% |
No. 43 -- 3.594% | No. 45 -- .491% |
No. 31 -- 2.614% | No. 19 -- .491% |
No. 61 -- 1.803% | No. 33 -- .491% |
No. 56 -- 1.797% | No. 37 -- .491% |
No. 32 -- 1.639% | No. 67 -- .327% |
No. 41 -- 1.147% | No. 26 -- .327% |
No. 70 -- 1.147% | No. 54 -- .163% |
No. 55 -- .983% | No. 16 -- .163% |
No. 63 -- .983% | No. 3 -- .163% |
The remaining 29.7% is aggregated from the remaining
Herbal Formulas reported in the survey
(see footnote #17).
The recommended dosage for all the Herbal Formulas is as follows:
Dosage Frequency I
(acute)
1
tablet (500 mg), 4 times daily.
Dosage Frequency II
(chronic)
2
tablets (1,000 mg), 4 times daily.
Dosage Frequency III
(severely chronic - terminal)
2
tablets (1,000 mg), 8 times daily.
The average number of doses required to affect total remission of ailments was determined to be 42.369 tablets, or 10.592 days at Dosage Frequency I and 5.296 days at Dosage Frequency II (see footnote #18).
Due to the therapeutic complications involved with severely chronic to terminal conditions in which Dosage Frequency III is used, it is not realistically feasible to determine a strict statistical time-duration for the proportion of dosage to the duration of the dosage-period required. However, the time determinations for the other two dosage frequencies are approximately equivalent for all cases profiled.
(NOTE: At the time Mr. Torvund conducted this report, the herbal formulas were available in tablet form only. Since liquid extracts are 8 to 10 times more potent than powdered herbs, we have since decided to make these products available only in liquid extract form.)
The following is a description of each Herbal Formula in the order of frequency of use, along with a brief discussion of applicable statistical criteria.

NOTE: The highly potent tonic-stimulant formulation of herbs in Herbal Formula No. 31 accounts for the high incidence of therapeutic side-effects.
